How metasearch works

When guests compare prices for your hotel, here's what decides who they book with.

What is metasearch?

The price-comparison results guests see when they search for your hotel by name — your room rate next to every OTA, side-by-side.

Where guests see it

Google's "Book on" panel, Tripadvisor, Trivago, Bing Hotels, Kayak, Skyscanner — every major travel site that compares prices.

Why bidding's different

You pay per click into your own booking engine. Bid too high and you waste spend; bid too low and OTAs outpace you and capture the guest.

Why Triptease wins

Four reasons hotels switch — and stay.

Parity-aware bidding

Bid harder when your direct rate's competitive. Pull back when OTAs undercut.

Guest-intent signals

10× more behavioural data than other providers — bid up for the guests most likely to book.

One platform, one report

Every channel, every metric — in a single dashboard your trading meeting can act on.

Every channel

Google, Tripadvisor, Trivago, Bing, Kayak, Skyscanner — one platform, one report.

Why hotels overpay or lose bookings

Guests are searching for your hotel.
OTAs are taking the booking.

More than half of hotel bookings now start on a metasearch site like Google Hotel Ads, Tripadvisor or Trivago. It's where guests compare prices side-by-side and decide who to book with.

The problem: OTAs spend millions automating their bids, and they undercut your direct rate the moment your back is turned. If you're not bidding intelligently, with your live price, your parity status and your own guest data, you're paying for clicks that don't convert, or losing the guest to Booking.com entirely.

OTAs out-bid you

on the auctions for your own brand name, driving up your CPCs and your costs.

Manual bidding can't keep up

with prices that change hour by hour, room type by room type, market by market.

Parity gaps quietly bleed revenue

and you only find out at month-end, when the booking is already lost to an OTA.

Undifferentiated bidding

every guest is bid the same way, regardless of how likely they are to book direct.

The solution

Metasearch on autopilot, built to win against OTAs.

Worked example

If you shift 50 OTA bookings per month to direct…

Margin recovered / booking $72
Per month + $3,600
Annualised + $43,200

Illustrative — the audit shows the actual opportunity for your property.

How we calculate these numbers

+35% direct revenue uplift. Median uplift across Triptease metasearch customers in their first 12 months on the platform, measured against the rolling 12-month baseline before they switched. Hotel sample skews towards independent and small-group properties in the US, UK, and EU markets. Year-over-year demand changes are not normalised out — extreme demand shocks (e.g. early 2020) are excluded from the baseline.

2× industry-average meta revenue. Meta-driven direct revenue expressed as a share of total website (direct) revenue. Industry average drawn from Google Hotel Search benchmarks and the Triptease portfolio of non-meta customers; Triptease meta-managed properties index at ~2× that share.

16% of website revenue. Top-decile metasearch performers in the managed portfolio; not a customer average. Below-decile customers typically run 4–9% depending on brand-search volume.

80M+ AI bid adjustments daily. Cross-portfolio bid changes made by the platform per 24 h, summed across all channels and properties. Reported here as a scale signal — your property's adjustment count depends on its room count and channel mix.

How it works

Live on Google Hotel Ads in days, not months.

01
Day 1

Connect your rates

We link your booking engine and price feed to Google Hotel Ads, Tripadvisor, Trivago, Bing and Kayak, using your existing stack. No replatforming.

02
Always on

Let the AI bid for you

Our algorithm reads live rate, parity, occupancy and 30,000+ guest signals to bid more on auctions you can win, and pull back when you can't.

03
Result

Win the booking direct

Guests see your hotel up top at a competitive rate and click through to your direct site instead of an OTA. You keep the margin, and the guest data.

Why it wins — the mechanics

Why hoteliers choose Triptease over generic metasearch agencies.

AI-powered algorithmic bidding

Most providers update bids a few times per day. Ours adjusts them millions of times, using data science, not rules of thumb.

→ 2× the industry average meta revenue.

Parity-aware bidding only Triptease

The only metasearch provider that bids based on your live parity status. We lean in when you're competitive, hold back when OTAs undercut.

→ Protects your ROI.

Powered by your own guest data

10× more on-site behavioral signals than other providers. Bid more for guests who actually look like they'll book. Ignore the tire-kickers.

→ Higher ROAS, less wasted spend.

Match OTAs before the click

Competitors price-match at the booking engine. Triptease updates the price inside Google Hotel Ads, for higher CTR, fewer guests lost to OTAs.

→ No Google price-inaccuracy risk.

One platform. Every metasearch channel that matters.

We manage every major auction from a single dashboard, with one unified price feed and one set of reporting.

FAQ

Questions hoteliers ask before getting started.

Will Triptease pull back spend when OTAs undercut us?

Yes — that's what "parity-aware bidding" means in practice. When OTAs undercut your direct rate beyond your tolerance (default 5%), Triptease automatically pulls spend back on those auctions instead of paying to send guests to a cheaper OTA price. Most hotels we audit have parity gaps somewhere; you're not alone. The audit includes a free parity check across your top OTAs so you can see exactly where you stand.

Can Triptease help us fill low-demand dates without discounting?

Yes, through our Automated Date Boost add-on. We connect directly to your RMS (Duetto, FLYR, IDeaS, Atomize and others) and use your forecast to automatically increase Google Hotel Ads bidding on dates that fall below an occupancy threshold you set. When occupancy recovers, the boost stops automatically. It's a fully-managed alternative to early discounting or paying extra OTA boost commission.

How is this different from running Google Hotel Ads ourselves?

Google Hotel Ads gives you the auction. It doesn't give you the bidding intelligence. Most hotels who run meta in-house bid the same on every auction, every guest, every date, which means you overpay on low-converting clicks and underbid on the ones you'd win. Triptease layers AI, parity data and your own guest signals on top of Google's auction so every dollar works harder.

Will it conflict with my booking engine or PMS?

No. Triptease plugs into your existing booking engine and price feed. We don't replace anything. Most hotels go live in days, not weeks.

How do you charge?

We offer flexible models: pay-per-stay (commission), CPC, or a fixed license fee, so you can pick the structure that fits your margins. We'll walk through pricing on the call.

What channels do you cover?

Google Hotel Ads, Tripadvisor (including TASP and TPA), Trivago, Bing Hotels, Kayak and Skyscanner, all managed from a single platform with unified reporting.

How long does it take to go live?

Most hotels are running on Google Hotel Ads within days of kick-off. We connect to your existing booking engine and price feed using standard hotel connectivity (WIHP, Rockhopper, Live Query and others). No replatforming, no PMS migration, and no new tracking pixels for your team to build.

How will I know it's actually working?

You get a single Triptease dashboard showing impression share, click-through rate, conversion, ROAS and net direct revenue across every channel (Google Hotel Ads, Tripadvisor, Trivago, Bing and Kayak), alongside regular performance reviews with your metasearch team. Every booking is tied back to the channel and the auction it came from, so you can defend the spend internally.

We're a small independent. Is this overkill?

Triptease works with everything from independent boutique hotels through to global chains. The auction mechanics are the same; the budget and bidding strategy scale to your property. The free audit will tell you honestly whether your search volume is large enough to make metasearch a worthwhile channel, and if it isn't, we'll say so.

Will I have support running the channel?

Yes. Every hotel is supported by a dedicated Triptease metasearch team (campaign managers, analysts and platform support) who handle setup, ongoing optimization and performance reviews. The exact level of one-to-one contact (e.g. a named account manager vs. shared team support) depends on your plan, and we'll walk you through what's included on the audit call.
